Exceptional Expression of Tempranillo:

The Very Definition of Spanish Terroir

It’s been awhile since Cuvee has featured the Legendary Spanish

Varietal Tempranillo. So for August we are thrilled to offer two perfect examples from the celebrated regions of Ribera Del Duero and Rioja.

Each bottle comes from some of the most respected winemakers in all of Spain. These wines possess great power and definition that should age well for years revealing the great terroir and complexity of Tempranillo.

“Silky, voluptuous and jammy…”

Our first offering comes from Ribera Del Duero, one of the truly iconic producers not only in Spain but all of Europe- Vega Sicilia.

The wine is Bodegas y Vinedos Alion Ribera del Duero 2014.

Alion was launched with the 1991 vintage by the famous Vega Sicilia estate. Inspired by the “modern classic” style of top Bordeaux, owner Pablo Alvarez wished to adapt this style of wine to the unique climate and soils in the western Ribera del Duero. Half of the grapes come from Vega Sicilia vineyards, the other half from Alion’s own vineyards near Penafiel. The wine is made by Javier Ausas, head winemaker of Vega Sicilia, at Alion’s dedicated, state-of-the-art winery. Alion is certainly a modern wine, an opulent and seductive 100% Tempranillo aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels, but – as one would expect from Vega Sicilia – there is nothing over-the-top about the wine. Not overripe, overextracted or overoaked, it is all about elegance, harmony, class…and sheer hedonistic pleasure!

RP 94 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

2014 is a better vintage in Ribera del Duero than in Rioja, and the 2014 Alión, shows it. Sourced from 130 hectares of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) in Ribera del Duero and possibly the most modern of the Vega Sicilia Group wines, it’s silky, voluptuous and jammy, ripe and generous without being too much. The grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, and the wine matured in new and second use French barriques for 12 to 14 months. It’s quite ripe and powerful yet balanced and with great freshness. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lots of fruit, juicy and showy, modern without excess. 284,284 bottles along with 6,500 magnums and some larger formats were produced. You might want to give it some more time in bottle. It was bottled in June 2016.

“Intense and voluminous with a long, impressive finish”

Our next offering is from Rioja which takes Terroir to new heights! The wine is Finca Allende “Geminde” 2015.  Founded in 1986 by Miguel Ángel de Gregorio in the hillside town of Briones, Finca Allende is located in an ancient 17th century manor, set in a medieval town square within the heart of Rioja Alta. Roughly translated as ‘further,’ Allende’s philosophy is to go further towards creating the perfect Rioja. The majority of vines are plowed with mules and grapes are hand-harvested, triple-selected and manually punched-down before undergoing extensive underground aging in both barrel and bottle. Known for producing round wines with great body and structure, each bottle is hand-crafted by and contains the signature of Miguel Ángel de Gregorio. Considered to be Spain’s first “terroirist”, Miguel Ángel’s sincere dedication to natural farming and preserving the integrity of Rioja Alta are why he is one of Rioja’s most celebrated winemakers and a mastermind when it comes to making world-class Tempranillo.

The vineyards of Finca Allende are planted near the village of Briones, about 2.5 hours north of Madrid and the same distance to the Atlantic Ocean as Bordeaux’s famous Saint Émilion. The vines grown in Finca Allende’s inimitable single vineyard named Gaminde is located in a single, south-facing 6-hectare block that was planted in 1942 at an elevation of 1,700 feet. Head-pruned vines grow in iron-rich, rocky and sandy-loam soils that are plowed by mule. Farmed organically and never irrigated, vines are planted incredibly close together, resulting in increased competition for nutrients. This unique vineyard site’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Sierra Cantabria mountain range provides the perfect combination for an ideal phenolic maturation: cold nights and warm days. When coupled with the region’s lofty winds, perfect phytosanitary conditions are created at Gaminde.
